Keeping It Legal: Independent Consultants, Contractors, Employees

As a consultant, you need to understand the legal implications of contractors vs. employees status — for yourself and for your subcontracting relationships.

Register Now

In this session, you'll get your questions answered from PICA's General Counsel Henry Telfeian on:

  • How to maintain your own independent status
  • How to choose whether to hire employees or subcontractors
  • What you need to put in place with your current and future contracts

As a 1099 business, self-employed professionals can maximize tax deductions and retirement savings, as well as easily grow a business, without committing to an ongoing payroll. After this presentation you'll:

  • Have a checklist for what’s required to be classified and paid as an independent contractor
  • Know whether to hire someone as a subcontractor or an employee for your own business
  • Understand what you may need to change in your subcontracting relationships now and how to do that.

Like a Boss

This presentation will give you an opportunity to put Best Practice #5 How to use subcontractors and stay legal in place to BUILD your consulting practice:

The Women In Consulting Best Practices
(identified year after year in our annual survey)

  1. Network to build your business and resources
  2. See and be seen
  3. Ask for what you’re worth
  4. Charge value-based project fees vs. hourly rates
  5. Use subcontractors
  6. Mark up subcontractors
  7. Always collect a percentage of the project fee upfront
  8. Renegotiate fees when the scope changes

Henry Telfeian, General Counsel, PICA

Despite his off-beat sense of humor, Henry is an expert in employment and labor law, having handled contracts, labor disputes, arbitrations and litigation over the last 35 years. Fanatical about paying as little tax as possible, he’s a huge proponent of being self-employed and squirreling money away in retirement accounts to decrease taxable income. In fact, he invented the phrase, "Friends don’t let friends W-2"TM. (Watch our two-minute video for more info.)
